Madzia Zalewa is a Berlin-based intermedia artist and set designer. Her practice is rooted in multispecies ethnography, Slavic folklore, and food preservation. In painting, installation, and curatorial projects, she's interested in the study of object agency and the reinvention of rituals as a way of community healing and imagining possible futures. Her larger-scale works typically involve elements of traditional craft and audience participation. She utilizes signs and symbols familiar to pop culture, mythology, and childhood fairy tales that act as memory triggers.
She works closely with biomaterials such as kombucha leather and agar bioplastics, using soil and herbal pigments. Their textures and transformations mirror the cycles of life and decay, allowing materials to shift and breathe freely. Her background as a Yin / Yoga Nidra teacher informs the spiritual rhythm of her practice: awareness of breath, gesture, and energetic translation of fragilities into tactile form.
